Starlink: Connecting the World from Space

Starlink is an ambitious new satellite array being produced by SpaceX. The goal of the system is to supply the world with internet from space. With 2 sets of satellites already launched, it's safe to say that SpaceX is well on their way to providing "space internet". Why is this important though? Well the new system will provide internet worldwide at incredible speeds when completed. Areas that might not have had access to internet before will now have access to high speed internet that will allow for remote places to connect to the world and see all that it has to offer. It will also allow internet services to stay online in the event of a blackout in major metropolitan areas. The ability to connect through the internet has allowed for the massive sharing of information among individuals worldwide already, and allowing less fortunate individuals in remote locations will be a great step forward. This new system also promises to be much more affordable for the general public, making it a better option than many current services if it is effective and works properly when launched. SpaceX has announced that it is their plan for it to be online and working for the northern U.S. and Canada by 2020. The ability to access the internet from anywhere in the world could also help to save lives. From firefighters fighting wildfires, to ships out at sea being able to communicate effectively with land could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. This system not only is exciting because of its practical applications but also because of the rockets being used to launch the system. The reusable rockets that SpaceX utilizes will allow for much more innovation in space in the coming years. With the internet becoming more and more a vital part of life in the modern world, I am extremely excited to see where this new sytem will take us.
